A Quick Guide

A developmental delay is characterized as delays in a child’s physical, mental, emotional, social, and communication skills. While sometimes, it is normal for a child to be a bit behind their peers, if this happens consistently then it can become a problem. It is important to recognize these delays because early intervention can prove to be quite beneficial in helping young children overcome their developmental delays or disabilities.

Research has identified the causes of some developmental delays being genes, pregnancy complications, and premature birth. However, at times, the cause may not be so clear.

Since there are many different types of interventions, you must decide with your healthcare professional on a combination or a single type that suits your child’s needs. Early childhood intervention aims to improve your child’s development which is crucial for their ongoing learning.

Common Developmental Delays and Their Early Intervention

If a child experiences delays in one or more areas of functioning. Then it is called a global developmental delay.

Some common development delays will be discussed ahead along with their early intervention strategies. These therapies can help your child in learning physical, behavioral, and social skills for everyday life.

Cognitive Delays

Cognitive delays refer to the delays a child experiences in their intellectual functioning.

Typically, a therapist may use play therapy or behavioral therapy to help children with cognitive delays. Parents may also be given psychoeducation and taught play therapy methods in order to deal with the child better at home.

Motor Delays

Motor delays refer to the inability of a child to coordinate their fine and gross motor skills along with processing sensory information.

Physical and Occupational therapy is used for the development of fine and gross motor skills.

Socioemotional and Behavioral Delays

These delays manifest in the way the child interprets their environment and interacts with it.

Behavioral therapy, play therapy, and skill-oriented therapy has been recommended for helping a child with socioemotional and behavioral delays. At times, medication may also be used if the child exhibits more problematic behaviors.

Speech and Language Delays

A child with speech issues may have both expressive and receptive delays. Expressive delays refer to when a child has a limited range of vocabulary according to their age and is unable to communicate.

Receptive delays refer to when a child has difficulty comprehending words or concepts.

Most frequently, a speech-language pathologist’s evaluation comes before the course of treatment. They might assess the child’s hearing and receptive and expressive language skills.

The most common type of intervention is speech and language therapy. It’s likely that parents may get specific exercises or guidelines to practice with their kids at home.

Early Childhood Intervention For Developmental Disabilities

Early Childhood intervention for children with disabilities can include a variety of collaborative interdisciplinary services and thus can take many different forms, such as a hospital or clinic-based care, school-based initiatives, parental and community support, and childhood therapies provided at home.

Family-centered approaches are more likely to produce the highest level of service satisfaction and also enhance the psychosocial well-being of the child and their caregivers.

According to research, Early Childhood intervention for children at risk for cerebral palsy found that they improved motor and cognitive outcomes up to preschool age, albeit the variability of the interventions made it difficult to pinpoint the most successful ones.

Children with disabilities can benefit from the assistance of healthcare experts in areas like:

  • Dressing, and balancing
  • Toileting
  • Drinking and eating
  • Motor skills
  • Playing, crawling, sitting, and walking
  • Speech and language
