A Quick Guide

Mindfulness is the ability to pay attention to the present moment in a non-judgmental, non-reactive, and open manner. In simple words, it can be described as a state of heightened internal and external awareness of one’s experience. In daily life, it is not used to fix problems but to accept them wholeheartedly which in turn helps to dissipate their impact or hold over a person. The wide-ranging benefits of mindfulness make it an essential self-help skill.

Benefits of Mindfulness

A few benefits of mindfulness are stated as follows:

1. Mindfulness helps to regulate our mental health.

It is especially useful in reducing daily stress, anxiety, and depression. It also helps people cope with somatic pain. In other words, it is a coping strategy that allows you to heal and raises your overall mental well-being. Note only mindfulness helps one to identify emotions but also understand and soothe them. Rather than avoiding or reacting to them. This helps one to regulate the pain of the emotions and manage them effectively.

2. Mindfulness helps one to reach a state of higher relaxation.

Although being relaxed is not the aim of mindfulness, it comes as a by-product of the entire practice. Yet, people who are mindful of their internal experience and accept it, feel calmer and lighter. For example, while being tensed, a person notices which part of the body is stiff and regulates breathing to release the muscles.

3. A mindful person is more productive

Mindfulness as a practice involves focusing on a single thing at a time. So, whenever you are mindfully performing an activity, the sole attention is on executing that rather than thinking about other things. If the mind does wander, the brain is trained to gently bring back the attention to work. As a result, such a person produces higher quality work and gets more done in less time. Similarly, it also helps one to be aware of and manage negative thoughts which hinder productivity. This assists in managing stress levels and increases enjoyment while doing the work.

4. It aids in self-discovery

Mindfulness can be used as a tool to discover one’s real self. A lot of the time we are on auto mode and do not pay attention to our thoughts or emotions. However, with mindfulness, we can harness the ability to identify these and learn a lot about who we are, and what are our patterns, and trace them back to their origin. Thus, such self-knowledge helps to make the world and its experiences more understandable and less chaotic and unpredictable.

5. It helps in getting in touch with our body

Many people lose the connection they have with their bodies as they grow older. For example, how many times do you actually feel and relish the taste of the food you eat? Or notice its texture on your tongue? Or its aroma?

This is because daily stress serves to increase the disconnection between our emotions, thoughts, and body. A simple mindfulness exercise of body scan helps to spark that connection again.  Through it, people start to feel like they are back and in sync with their bodies. Thus, they experience any sensations fully.

6. It strengthens the immune system.

Mindfulness is used to regulate the stress response. Consequently, it improves the immune system by dissipating prolonged stress.

7. Mindfulness can be used to cope with pain.

Many people with chronic pain conditions try their best to block or avoid the pain. As a result, they make an effort to distract themselves or in some cases fight the pain with anger and frustration. This only adds to their stress and makes them feel helpless when their condition does not improve. In this case, mindfulness can help them to deal with the psychological pain i.e. anxiety, frustration, and stress of the physical pain, and reduce its perception and intensity.

8. It can improve one’s attention span

Mindfulness helps to train the brain to sustain its attention on one thing instead of shifting from one thing to another.
